The small town of Buckhorn, 30 min drive North of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada is the home of Headwater Wooden Boat Shop. Buckhorn and the Kawartha Lakes region, with all it's lakes and rivers offer some of central Ontario's most rewarding recreational canoeing - A natural location for a canoe builder.
Buckhorn is the centre, and in my opinion, of the most beautiful part of the 385 km long Trent-Severn Waterway connecting Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay. |
| Paddling in the area You may set out on a leisurely paddle along the shoreline of Buckhorn Lake. A number of beautiful areas is just waiting to be explored. Just north of Buckhorn is the "Wolf Range" an almost undeveloped tract of land covering approximately 300 square miles of rugged country, typical of the southern Canadian Shield. The area is home to an abundant wildlife population including moose, deer, wolf, black bear, the common loon and the great blue heron among others. The Wolf Range has over 200 kms of canoes routes. On the west perimeter of the area is the Missisaugua River to conquer for the adventurers. This two day trip is not for the faint-hearted or the beginner, it's 18 portages and numerous rapids will quickly remind you of the physical and mental demands of river travel. On the east perimeter of the area you will find Eels Creek, a family
friendly down river excursion with only 6 portages, which can be paddled
in one day, but I would recommend two days with overnight camping at
the beautiful "High Falls". |
